Why do Catholics make sign of Cross 3 time before Gospel reading
Hello everyone, thanks for visiting Nigeria Catholic Blog today. What I have to share with you has to do with the Holy Mass. You must have noticed that after the first reading or second reading, then the gospel acclamation is sang by the lay reader, or a chorister, then the Gospel begins in the order below.
The Priest celebrating the Holy Mass will say,
Priest : The peace Lord be with you.
Response : And with your Spirit.
Priest : A reading from the Holy Gospel according to,…… (Any of the Gospel)
Response : Praise be to you Lord, Jesus Christ. (While making the sign of the cross on your forehead, lips, and breast.)
I believed we all know that the Sign of the Cross is the shortest form of prayer in Catholic Church.
Now, going straight to the answer:
- Sign of the Cross on the forehead: It a prayer which means “Lord make me understand the WORD I am about to hear.
- Sign of the Cross on the lips: It a prayer which means “Lord make me proclaim your WORD.
- Sign of the Cross on the breast: It a prayer which means “Lord make me believe in my heart your WORD.
I believe that for those of us who don’t know before now will take the prayers seriously, and even those who know but don’t take it serious.
