THE THIRD ARTICLE OF THE CREED

Key:

Q = Question

A = Answer

E = Explanation

47 (Q) What is the third article of the creed?

  • (A) The third article of the creed is, “who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary”.
  • (E) The mission of the Holy Spirit is always conjoined and ordered to that of the Son. The Holy Spirit, “the Lord, the giver of Life”, is sent to sanctify the womb of the Virgin Mary and divinely fecundate it, causing her to conceive the eternal Son of the Father in a humanity drawn from her own.

48 (Q)What does the third article of the creed mean?

  • (A) The third article of the creed means that God the Son took a Body and Soul like ours, in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, by the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • (E) This process is what the Church called the Incarnation. The church calls the mystery of the wonderful union of the divine and human natures in the one divine Person of the word the “Incarnation”. To bring about salvation the Son of God was made “flesh” (John 1:14) and became truly man. Faith in the Incarnation is a distinctive sign of the Christ faith.

49 (Q) Had Jesus Christ any father on Earth?

(A) Jesus Christ had no father on earth: St. Joseph was only his guardian or foster-father.

(E) There are some verses in the Bible where people said “Don’t we know his father and mother? It’s his father not Joseph the carpenter? Isn’t his mother Mary?

They ask themselves these question, to prove to know Jesus parent, also using it as an excuse not to believe his teaching or believe in him. With this chapter of faith, we see that the incarnation has nothing to do with Joseph the Carpenter. The incarnation was the power of the Holy Spirit manifestation on the Virgin Mary.

(A) Our Saviour was born in a stable at Bethlehem

(E) Jesus was born at Bethlehem in a stable Luke 2:11
