CATECHISM OF THE CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (Penny Catechism) is a small book consist of series of questions and answers. What I will do as a teacher, is to present the questions and answers to you and give you some explanation for deeper understanding.I told you in my previous post, that the teaching of the church are based on three theological virtues. Which are Faith, Hope, and Charity (Love). I we be teaching on FAITH for now.
(Q) = QUESTION
(A) = ANSWER
(E) = EXPLANATION
1. (Q) Who made you?
(A) God made you
(E) A Christian, whether he/she has spent more years in Christianity or not should not find it difficult to understand that God made him/her. Irrespective of your denomination, the fact still remains that God created you and the whole universe. Genesis chapter 1 tells us about that.
2. (Q) Why did God made you?
(A) God made you to know Him, love Him serve Him in this world, and be happy with him forever in the next
(E) God created man out of His own free will, why? To know Him, love Him and serve Him whether here on earth or in heaven. He made us in his own image and likeness. To know Him, love Him and serve Him is what God wants from us.
3. (Q) To whose image and likeness did God made you?
(A) God made you in his own image and likeness
(E) See explanation 2 and 4
4. (Q) Is the likeness of God in your body, or in your soul?
(A) The likeness to God is chiefly in your soul.
(E) God making us to his own image and likeness is not in our body but soul.
God made the body first out of clay and then breathe life into the body. So the likeness is not in the “clay” but in the soul that gives life to the “clay”.
5. (Q) How is the soul like to God?
(A) Your soul is like to God because it is a spirit, and immortal
(E) God is a spirit, nobody has ever seen Him but, Scripture recorded that Moses saw the back of God. No details how the back look like. I believe Moses could not find words to describe His back. Exodus 33v17-23. That is what the soul is like, invisible.
6. (Q) What do you mean when you say that your soul is immortal?
(A) When I say my soul is immortal, I mean that my soul can never die.
(E) When men die, nothing happens to the soul. It goes back to where it came from, the creator. It is only God that can kill both soul and body.
7.(Q) Of which must we take most care, of your body or soul?
(A) You must take care of your soul; for Christ has said, ‘What does it profit a man if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his own soul?’
(E) Christ has made it clear already when he ask the above question in Matthew 16v26. You must take care of your soul by leaving a holy life.
8. (Q) What must you do to save your soul?
(E) Three things that guarantee a man’s salvation is Faith, Hope, and Charity . Above all “trust in God’s mercy and compassion rather than your own good deeds”.
